The Eyeful Tower Revit Sample File- Rac 2011

OK. This one I'm going to have to give credit to Kevin for.  Kevin's a Revit Structure guru in Texas.  We had a very in depth conversation about BIM late Friday and it was so refreshing to talk to someone who was so passionate and went the extra mile with his projects.  His company does very elegant structural work in Revit Structure and Kevin definitely gets a starring role in my new movie, Mission BIMpossible.  Kevin, thanks for your time on Friday and I look forward to our next conversation.

I had presented this to our Revit Architecture Essentials class this week.  One of the students, who happened to speak french and had studied all of the history of the Eiffel Tower, thought I was serious when I said it was the "Eyeful" tower.

Well, as coincidences happen to be, this structure really is an eyeful.  The French people didn't want it when it was first created, and now it's a vital part of their landscape.  Hmm, sounds a lot like Revit and BIM.

I recommend you download the DWF version of the file and laod Design Review.  If you do, go to the Tools section on the Ribbon Toolbar, pick the Section Face button and drag the slicer around.  This is a truly amazing feature for any Revit project in order to visualize the building and literally get quite the eyeful.

Oh, another thing....if you open the Revit file, you'll see all of the hard work I put into creating the Eiffel Tower in Revit.  Actually, I just found a DFX file on the internet, imported it into Revit and made up a sheet set.  If any of us actually had the time to actually model the structure in Revit Structure, that would be fantastic.

When you look at the model, imagine how it was built without any visualization tools.  They had no CAD, no structural analysis software, no BIM, yet it still stands.  It's quite the compelling argument that we don't need any technology to build a building.  I'm sure it took forever to draw the building by hand, but so many of you seem to think that hand drafting or AutoCAD 14 is all you'll ever need.

Revit Stair Master - Simply a "Step" above the rest

I found this photo and sent it to our brilliant Revit guru, Mark Rothman. An hour later I get the Revit file as seen in the photos on the right

I knew he could do it. I just didn't think he'd ever do it that quickly. Apparently there's seeing things in 3D and then there's seeing things in Revit 3D and having the ability to recreate just about anything in Revit.

Mark's available for conceptual modeling, massing and family creation services for anyone out there needing technical assistance or training. Our services are available nationally and via webcast, so all you need is a credit card and an internet connection.

Here's the stair Revit file for you to download and play with. Please don't forget to tip your consultant.

Also, click here for more information about the origin of the stair and the building it's in.

Revit Downloadsof the Day

Here are 4 models created by our 3D modeling specialist Mark Rothman
Mark is currently ranked as the number 1Autodesk instructor in the country.
I hate to brag, but his teaching style is amazing. With over 250 students trained in the last 3 months, I have no idea how he finds time to create these models. He's available for hire anywhere in the world if you'd like help creating Revit massings like these.

Swept Away with Revit

I just made a really cool Revit model with the brand new Swept Blend command.
The great news is that I've just uploaded the Revit model for you to play with.
The terrible news is that you can't open it in Revit Arch 2008. You're going to have to wait until April.

I hope your copy of Revit is on subscription so you can get the new version when it comes out. Repeat after me "Revit Architecture 2008 64bit". *I just read a blog today stating it wasn't coming out as 64bit, but it made it seem like a midyear update could happen.

Here's a link to this model. Don't even bother clicking on it now unless you've got a demo version of Revit 2009 (28mb file)

By the way, this whole model took about 8 minutes to create including the curtain wall system.

As long as we're on the subject of Revit Engineering - Here are some Revit MEP sample files

You can open these in Revit Structure, MEP or Architecture.

Whenever I do a Revit demo for a company, I always close with the Completed Mechanical System.
Who can argue with being able to move an HVAC grille and watching the flex duct extend with it.

This is what BIM is all about. Of course, this opens a whole can of worms for the typical conversation with a prospective Revit Architect who 9 times out of 10 will say, "why should I get Revit, my engineers are using Autocad 2000". Why not tell them you're moving to Revit and suggest they move to Revit as well?
Revit comes bundled with AutoCAD, so you never have to choose one or the other.

Typically, the engineers will add Revit Structure and MEP when you move to Revit Architecture. They are starting to get it on their own because somebody has to do the LEED calculations which Revit MEP and Architecture do. I've even got lighting fixture companies buying Revit MEP now so they can work with sun/shade studies, heating and cooling based on their lighting package and easily generate quantities.

Click on the links below to download the RVT files. These are great to see how you can interact with Revit MEP engineers.

Revit Model exported to 3ds Max with Sample RVT file

Two of our employees were working on a little project linking Revit and Max. Mark created a model in Revit Architecture and exported it to 3ds Max (hold on everyone...it's just 2008, not 2009, but we'll get to that soon enough). Richard took the model and created 6 renderings.

It took Richard 30 hours to create all 6 renderings. That may seem like a long time, but he says it would have taken over 60 hours if he had to do it from an AutoCAD drawing.

Richard's work is exquisite and if you're looking for a an outsourced renderer to give life to your Revit models, visit Richard's site at
www.cubestudiosinc.com and let him know I referred you to him.

Now that Mental Ray will be the rendering engine, we'll see how much more time it saves architects to create high quality renderings from their Revit models.

Click here for the link to the actual Revit model so you can play around with it.

I'm back....Welcome to the Parthenon Revit Sample file

Well, I hope you've missed me for the past few days. I've never been on a diaper changing vacation before, but I hope I can redeem my frequent diaper miles for something good.

Being the BIM (Butt Inspecting Man) Manager sure beats being a CAD (caca and doodoo) Manager for sure.

Well, anyway, here's the latest (and oldest) Revit model created by Mark Rothman. How and when he finds the time to do this, I don't know, but as usual, he wants to share his work with the world.

Click on either of the photos to download the Parthenon.rvt file.

Enjoy playing with the model...
Gregory

If only they had Revit 4500 years ago...World's oldest Revit sample.

Mark sends me an IM earlier today telling me I have to see something really cool. He recreated a pyramid in Revit in 3.5 hours. I've uploaded the file and you can click either picture to download it and play with it. It looks like a very energy efficient building and I don't think it has a carbon footprint. He said doing this in 3ds Max would have taken days. I guess that's why he's ranked in the top 10 Revit instructors in the country.

Here's a funky Revit sample you can download and play with

PS. This entire project took less than 30 minutes to create. How long would it have taken you in AutoCAD? Comments are welcome.

Revit Structure Sample File with Rebar - Robobat Extensions Rocks

In my post of October 15, Revit Structure: A New Extension - Reinforcement of slab openings - BIM & BEAM, we talked about Robobat's free Revit Structure extensions http://www.extensions4revit.com/n/e4r/849/50 to design rebar in the structural model.

When I walked into Joe's office today, I saw him playing with the extensions program and asked him to forward me the RVT file so you could download it and see how it looks.
(The live section in the photo took about 15 seconds to generate).

(We're having a Revit Structure class 3 Fridays in a row starting this Friday. It will be available via live webcast. Contact me if you'd like to take the class. You don't need to own Revit Structure in order to participate)

It's amazing that you can create rebar cages in seconds, have it all scheduled and instantly create sections. For anyone who's had to estimate rebar, try to convince your structural engineers to use Revit Structure so you can greatly reduce your estimating time and be 100% accurate.
Click here to download and open the file.

Just a "Moment" with Revit Structure - Revit Structure rvt file attached

It's 12:15pm and I'm sitting in on our Revit Structure class with a group of 10 structural engineers from a large engineering firm in Miami (who are looking to partner with Revit Architecture firms anywhere).

In 5 minutes we created a curved beam with perpendicular supports running along the beams. One of the engineers, Javier, decided to make the second curved beam at a lower profile than the 1st beam. Revit Structure automatically slopes the framing support beams to exactly where they're supposed to be.

"What used to take us hours, now takes seconds to minutes and it's 100% accurate. This doesn't even include the time it takes to generate sections elevations and schedules."

Personally, 20 years later, now I'm glad I took statics, concrete and steel design courses in college. (Not really, but at least I understand what all this stuff means.)

Click here or on the picture to download the Revit file "WorkingWithBeams.rvt" and yes, it will open in Revit Architecture.
